The swastika has been used by many cultures and  religions for thousands of years.  It is thought to have originated in the ancient Greek culture as a symbol of luck and prosperity.  This was later adapted by later cultures, such as Jainists, Hindus, Buddists, and Native Americans.  During the rule of Adolf Hitler in the Third Reich, Hitler made the swastika the official symbol of Nazi Germany.  This is perhaps the main reason the swastika seems to be so offensive.  Even today, the cultures that use the swastika always have the swastikas facing left, singe right facing swastikas support Nazism.

In the early 1920s, CocaCola even used the swastika as a logo.  With the rise of Nazism in the late 1930s, however, this logo was banned in all coke products.
